Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital
Eastern Advanced Medical Center, Proton Therapy and Comprehensive Oncology Center, Hong Kong, China
The Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital is a prestigious, private hospital treating patients in Hong Kong and the region of SE Asia for more than 90 years. Tsoi Kobus worked intensively with HKSH to plan and design the Eastern Advanced Medical Centre – the first HKSH development off their historic main campus in Happy Valley.
The new 20-story, 250,000 SF facility treats inpatients and outpatients, offers comprehensive oncology diagnostic and treatment services; and features the region’s first proton therapy center with two Hitachi gantries and advanced imaging capabilities. The stacked organization of the proton center on this contrained site includes Hitachi’s first vertical beamline. The design provides the best long-term clinical planning and flexibility for HKSH via strategically locating vertical core elements of the program at the west end, leaving the center of the floor open for clinical uses and adjacencies to treatment rooms.
A distinguished feature on the Hong Kong skyline, the expressed “exoskeleton” on the exterior is part of the tower’s structural system and allowed the team to build the maximum FAR area on the site – since the structure was “outside” the building, making the small floor plates as efficient as possible.
The HKSH’s Comprehensive Oncology Centre promotes research, education, and training, endeavoring to provide quality services in clinical diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and now proton therapy.
